Community Installation: Drawing the Still Life is both an installation artwork and a community drawing event. Handmade ceramic sculptures create still life displays to be used as drawing inspiration. This ever-evolving installation is an abstract representation of a vanita, or a still life that symbolically references ephemerality, joys of living, and the contemplation of inevitable death. During the drawing event, paper and various drawing materials are available to the public. This allows participants to not only see but participate in the art making process through drawing. The major goals of this project are to encourage community members to make and appreciate art while creating a thought provoking experience for all in the community to share together. The project ultimately encourages creative expression and promotes self discovery.
The first iteration of this project took place in the Remington neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland, during "Remfest" in September, 2023. Examples of drawings created are displayed below.
